Snares Island penguin rescued

August 22nd, 2008 by The Penguin Lover

A project leader at the Department of Primary Industries in Tasmania rescued a badly injured penguin. The penguin was cut along his back, obviously tired and hungry. Dr Pemberton took the ailing penguin home to a special compound and nursed the bird back to health.

recap: Giant Penguin Fossil found in Peru

August 18th, 2008 by The Penguin Lover

Just when you might have thought penguins were great right now… apparently they’ve been great for hundreds of thousands… er, millions of years. Thank goodness for that!

A giant penguin fossil was found. This lead to all kinds of great discoveres and insights… where did penguins originally live and what weather did they thrive in?

You can read of this penguin fossil story at the Sydney Morning Herald.

I looks somewhat like a combination of a penguin and a pelican… what do you think?

Thanks for the reminder of this  penguin news from Magni about this story. The story was originally published mid-June 2008, but after reading Magni’s post I realized I said nothing and should share the big beaked fun.

I just read that today at the Lincoln Park Zoo, in Chicago, a rockhopper penguin chick made its debut. Can you say, Aweeeeeeeee!

Now the Penguin House at LPZ is a must on my list, it looks like a fabulous locale… if only I had my own jet!

Thanks to the Chicagoist for twittering!

Penguin Balloons Spark a Rescue

July 29th, 2008 by The Penguin Lover

Here’s a fun news story about penguins disrupting the peace and quiet of the more air…

LONDON (AFP) — Two balloons shaped like penguins sparked a major air and sea search when they were mistaken for a crashed microlight, Scottish coastguards said Wednesday.

Three coastguard teams, a lifeboat and a Royal Air Force helicopter were scrambled after a member of the public reported seeing what he thought was a downed aircraft off the coast of Aberdeenshire, northeast Scotland.

“We sent the teams out to look for it but all they found was two penguin balloons,” said watch officer Anne Young, from Aberdeen Coastguard. “Goodness only knows where they came from.”

I would have liked to have been there to see that!
