Exciting news for people who love penguins! Another great penguin movie is in the works. Originally published in 1938, Mr. Popper’s Penguins is a popular children’s book about a poor painter who receives a penguin he names Captain Cook. As the story goes on Mr. Popper’s house becomes full of penguins which teaches him some important life lessons. The book is a regular read in classrooms 3rd – 5th grade, inspiring penguin themed lesson plans around the country.

Mr. Popper dreams about leaving his boring life and going on an adventure to the Antarctic. When the legendary Admiral Drake sends him a live penguin in response to his letter, he is thrilled. Very soon, he also receives a female companion for his penguin and they have 10 children. But Mr. Popper has enough trouble supporting his human family, and so he has the idea to take his penguins to the stage. Soon, Mr. Popper is up to his ears in adventure as he tries to manage 12 performing penguins and the trouble they inevitably get into. Mr. Popper”s Penguins remains a classic, read and remembered by generations of loyal fans. Now, 70 years after its publication, it will be given a fresh new voice as an audiobook to attract a new generation of listeners.

Mr. Popper’s Penguins is finally going to  hit the big screen with an undated storyline starring Jim Carrey.

According to MTV.com:

The film adaptation is said to be an upscale spin on the book, with Carrey in the role of the titular Mr. Popper, now a high-powered businessman who suddenly inherits six penguins. As Popper becomes increasingly attached to his feathered friends, his life unravels and, you guessed it, wackiness ensues. According to the script synopsis, Popper’s swanky apartment turns into a winter wonderland, and he almost lands in jail.

It’s said the movie will begin production with Fox this October in New York. No word yet when the movie will open.

Recently I saw drawings of penguins by a class of 1st graders, they were SO very cute! So I thought I’d share some ideas with you about how to draw your own penguin. There are a lot of different ways to draw penguins, you can choose to draw something very simple or artistic or you might want to try to draw a very realistic looking penguin which is going to be a much more advanced drawing.

Here I’ll show you how to draw 3 different penguins. Each how to draw a penguin tutorial is fairly basic. I created them to be simple so you can get started and with some practice make your own fun cartoon penguin drawings. Have fun!

How to draw a penguin – Easy
How to draw a penguin – moderate
How to draw a penguin – advanced

Drawing penguins isn’t too hard once you know the basic steps. Practice drawing the different penguins below and soon you’ll be drawing your own style of penguins! You can add ad much or as little detail as you like. Change the way the penguin’s eyes look or maybe add extra details to make your penguin drawing look like a specific type of penguin.

How to draw a penguin – Easy
First lets start with a basic penguin drawing, nothing to fancy but still very cute:
Always start with the body and then draw the belly. Add arms/flippers, feet and last add the eyes and beak. Now you can color your penguin however you like.

How to draw a penguin – moderate
A little more difficult is drawing a penguin from the side. Again start with the body, see the little tail on the backside? Then draw the belly and then add one flipper, one foot. Last you need to draw one eye and a side view of the beak.

How to draw a penguin – advanced
Finally a little more advance penguin drawing – this is a cartoon Little Blue Penguin (also known as a Fairy penguin). First draw the penguin head and then the body, erase the area where they overlap. Repeat this process to draw the penguin’s white belly and head area. Then add the flippers and feet and finally add the eyes and beak.

You can add in your own special touch to your penguin drawing by including details for feathers or draw some clothing on your penguin. A hat would be super cute!

You can even try changing the eyes, turning a flipper to wave or maybe color your penguin drawing a little different and see what other fun penguins you can come up with.

In case you’ve missed this amazing penguins news, there’s a rare black penguin that’s been spotted recently. The now famous photo of this all black penguin (aka melanistic penguin) was taken by Andrew Evans during his trip from Washington D.C. to Antarctica. For a few weeks now there has been a bit of talk about this really cool photo. At first glance I was sure it was another Photoshop joke. However, after reading the articles there’s no doubt this penguin is genuine. How awesome is that?

“He looked like a single black king moving across a chessboard of so many white pawns.” Evans said.

All black penguin sighted by Ted Cheeseman in 2006

Nature usually takes care of animal abnormalities, so it’s been assumed that this unique penguin wouldn’t last long in the while. However, there are reports that this penguin has been spotted previously so he has obviously been around a while. Ted Cheeseman of Cheeseman Ecology Safaris shares his sighting of the all black penguin from January 2006.

What kind of penguin is this?

This is a King Penguin, and according to Evans reports, seems to be living just fine among his friends and family in the colony. He may even have a mate.

What is a Melanistic penguin?

National Geographic describes melanistic as “Melanism is merely the dark pigmentation of skin, fur–or in this case, feathers. The unique trait derives from increased melanin in the body.”.
